b. 1958 Painter, installation artist, educator, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts (ASP), publisher, and entrepreneur. He studied at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1978–1983), graduating with distinction from the studio of Professor Stefan Gierowski. He taught at the Faculty of Design at the same academy from 1985 to 2023, and was granted the title of professor in 2019. From 1982 to 1992, he was a member of the Gruppa collective, actively exhibiting and participating in its artistic actions. Co-founder and publisher of the magazine“Oj dobrze już”. Since 1992, artist has shifted his focus from painting to performance and engaging in interdisciplinary practices. Paweł Kowalewski combines painting with installation, often addressing themes of memory, history, and identity. His works are marked by a conceptual approach and the use of diverse media. Among his most renowned installations is Simulator of Totalitarianism – an immersive art project juxtaposing brutal imagery of repression with scenes of everyday life under totalitarian regimes, revealing the banality of evil and social indifference to systemic violence. Another project is Power and Beauty, a deeply personal narrative of ten Polish women – mothers whose youth coincided with World War II and the rise of two major totalitarian systems.
