Igor Mitoraj
1944 – 2014 A Polish sculptor, painter and monumental artist internationally renowned for his figurative sculptures inspired by classical antiquity and Mediterranean culture. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he studied painting under Tadeusz Kantor, he later continued his education at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From the 1970s onward he lived and worked mainly in France and Italy, especially in Pietrasanta, the historic centre of marble sculpture. His monumental bronzes and marble sculptures, characterized by fragmented classical bodies and mythological references, became iconic examples of contemporary reinterpretations of ancient art. Recipient of the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis (2005) and the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2012).
