Jarosław Modzelewski
b. 1955 Painter, draughtsman, educator, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1980, he graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he studied under Professor Stefan Gierowski. Beginning in 1982, he worked as Gierowski’s assistant, later heading his own painting studio until 2020. He became a full professor during this time. From 1982 to 1992, he was a member of the Gruppa collective, participating in exhibitions and actions. Co-founder and publisher of “Oj dobrze już”. In the 1990s, together with Marek Sobczyk, he co-founded a private School of Art in Warsaw. Since 1997, he has worked primarily with tempera. Recipient of the Jan Cybis Award (2004), “Polityka’s” Passport (1998), and the Kazimierz Ostrowski Award (2014). Jarosław Modzelewski, often referred to as a “painter of everyday icons”, focuses on depicting ordinary people and daily life situations with subtle narrative and introspective tone. His paintings are marked by simplified forms and a limited color palette, giving them a timeless and universal quality. Modzelewski frequently uses the technique of egg tempera, referencing the tradition of sacred painting.
His works are in the collections of: the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, and Poznań; Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw; the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź; the Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz; Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw; the Starak Collection; Museum Jerke in Recklinghausen; ING Polish Art Foundation; and numerous private collections in Poland and abroad.
