Marek Sobczyk
b. 1955 Painter, installation artist, graphic artist, art theorist, educator, publisher, and performance artist. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1975–1980), in the studio of Professor Stefan Gierowski. From 1983 to 1992, he was a member of Gruppa, participating in its exhibitions and actions. Co-founder and publisher of the magazine "Oj dobrze już". He collaborated with Jarosław Modzelewski (joint painting projects) and Piotr Młodożeniec as part of the graphic design duo “Zafryki” (1990–2004). He is the author of Kurs abstrakcji (1996) and Kurs sublimacji (2006), and is currently preparing Kurs psycho/somo/socjo-analizy. Co- creator of gravity cinema and author of its manifestos (with Mateusz Falkowski). Founder of the MAMMAL Foundation. Recipient of the Jan Cybis Award (2012). Marek Sobczyk is an artist who combines painting with art theory, graphic design, and spatial installations. He created expressive, figurative compositions rich in color, filled with symbols, references, and surprising juxtapositions of meaning – particularly in works exploring religious themes. In his installation Simple Rainbow (1991/2019), placed in front of Zachęta – National Gallery of Art, he drew on biblical symbolism while also addressing contemporary social debates.
