Jerzy Nowosielski

1923 - 2011 A Polish painter, draftsman, stage designer, philosopher and Orthodox theologian. One of the most outstanding contemporary writers of icons. A Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. A member of Grupa Krakowska II  (i.a. Jerzy Bereś, Tadeusz Brzozowski, Tadeusz Kantor, Jan Tarasin, Jerzy Tchórzewski). A winner of Brother Albert Award (1977), Jan Cybis Award (1988), Witold Wojtkiewicz Award (1999). Decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1998), the Gold Cross of Merit (1976), St Maria Magdalene Medal of 2nd degree (1985), the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis (2008).


Works in collections: National Museum in Warsaw, Krakow, Poznań, Wrocław, Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, Jacek Malczewski Museum in Radom, Museum in Tarnów, DePaul Art Museum in Chicago, monumental projects in the churches i.a. in Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Hajnówka, Jelenia Góra, Loudres, Bielsk Podlaski, Zawiercie.

Selected exhibitions: Venice Biennale (1956); Biennale in Săo Paulo (1959); Guggenheim International Award, New York (1960); Festivals of Polish Contemporary Painting, Szczecin (1962); retrospective exhibition, Muzeum Narodowe, Poznań (1993); retrospective exhibition, Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw (1994); retrospective exhibition, Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw (2003).
