Urszula Broll
1930 – 2020 A Polish painter, co-founder of the St-53 and Oneiron groups, and one of the most important figures of the Silesian art scene of the second half of the 20th century. Associated with the neo-avant-garde, spiritual abstraction and Buddhist philosophy. Her work evolved from post-cubist and matter painting toward meditative compositions and mandalas inspired by Zen, tantra and Jungian thought. Together with Andrzej Urbanowicz, she co-created the legendary artistic and intellectual circle around the studio at Piastowska 1 in Katowice, which became a centre of underground artistic and Buddhist culture in Poland. Co-founder of the first Buddhist community in communist Poland and co-editor of the first Polish Buddhist magazine “Droga”, later “Droga Zen”. Awarded the honorary distinction “Meritorious for Polish Culture” (2014).
