The title OSB Sun Set refers both to the materiality of the SOON_ project's exhibition surface and to the motif of decline—the setting sun. This, however, is not a romantic sunset, but rather a figure of transition: from the end of a particular order toward the promise of something new. It is the promise of modernity, whose light gradually began to dissipate over time, revealing the fractures and contradictions embedded within the avant-garde's utopian aspirations.
Within the context of the historical avant-garde, the sun may be understood as a symbol of the inherited order of nature, rationality, and established aesthetic canons. As in the futurist opera Victory over the Sun (1913), whose protagonists sought to subjugate the titular star—a symbolic act of breaking with the continuity of history and overthrowing existing artistic models and the values attached to them. Yet these ambitions were not purely destructive; they sought to open a space for a new language, a new sensibility, and a new artistic consciousness.
A crack appeared in the smooth surface of history, through which the future was meant to emerge.
The sculptural intervention inscribed within the architecture of the space recalls this moment in the history of art while simultaneously questioning the contemporary relevance of its revolutionary premises and their consequences. Diagonal cuts introduce a sense of dynamism into an ordered, geometrically structured space, while also unsettling the boundary between what lies "before" and "behind" us. The previously blank surface is interrupted, exposing the raw structure of the past upon which the possibility of imagining the new is built.
Nikodem Biegowski (born 1997) is an artist and builder. He graduated from the Faculty of Intermedia at the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts Poznań and the Faculty of Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In his practice, he employs gestures whose effectiveness is measured in inverse proportion to the means used to produce them. His works emerge from observations and elements of everyday reality, whose potential meanings often reveal themselves only in the afterimages of artistic action. He is particularly interested in the tension between formal simplicity and the capacity to activate broader fields of meaning. His selected exhibitions include Special Care (Galeria Turnus, 2023), There Will Be Nothing (Scena Robocza, 2021), BASSBUSBUTBEUYS (Stadion Olimpia, 2021), Long Break (Komuna Warszawa, 2021), and Visual Convention (Galeria Luka, 2020).
