Mariusz Tarkawian
Peeped drawings
3rd December 2013 - 5th January 2014

Tarkawian is a careful observer. His drawings are often made in the course of a discussion; keeping a close distance, he is at the same time observing and recording people, snatches of sentences. This is how unique notes passed through a personal filter of his own emotions, feelings, impressions are formed. The figures are usually drawn in an unevident manner, with a subtle contour of the selected fragments.

When the redundant detail is abandoned, an emotion and a philosophical sense of events emerge. The subject matter of Suspicious Drawings is situations related to the sphere that is closest to the artist, i.e. art. The drawings are created mainly in situations that are natural for Mariusz: while preparing and assembling exhibitions, during curators’ talks, heated discussions of artists, vernissages, symposia, appearances, and artistic activities.

It is a kind of a visual account of where he is and what is going on around. In his drawings, Tarkawian often reveals his sense of humour and warm irony when describing events, especially when “noting” the world of the contemporary art, which is close to him.
