The series of photographs was created as an effect of developing frames from some discovered rolls of film in a traditional photographic laboratory. The films came from an old abandoned cinema in Transylvania. Since the rolls of film are positive, their development resulted in a negative. It was treated as an alternative reversed dimension where black is white, light is dark, and the invisible is capable of being uncovered. Selecting frames, the process of soaking them in the developing liquid is similar, in symbolic terms, to a sentimental journey to the past. In the age of new media, instantly processed and freely modified images, a physical contact with a video material is like entering the space of the lost “world of witchcraft”. Who passes from the positive to the negative is: the armed Samuel L. Jackson, a girl from the film “The Exorcist” and others extricated from the entanglement of colourful frames. The cinema no longer exists and most rolls of film burnt in a fire. This adds some romanticism to this already sentimental ivy-clad island of ghosts in a glazed modern space of the Spectra building. What is more, it becomes a memorial site, an attempt at a fragmentary reconstruction of memories. Working in the virtual world of new media on an everyday basis, Małgorzata appreciates the physical presence of rolls of film and the opportunity to perform the ritual of materialising them in a completely different surroundings.
