Metal casting workshops
Within the frame of the first edition of the Wena Grant Programme held by the Starak Family Foundation, the High School for the Arts from Olsztyn organized a metal foundry workshop. The goal of the project was to get the students acquainted with metal casting techniques. Unfortunately, due to the pandemics, the students were unable to take part in the Festival of High Temperatures or the workshops that were supposed to be held at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw.
When the lead teacher, Ewald Kornek, decided to change the project’s curriculum, he instead organised a lost-wax casting workshop, which was attended by 15 students and 6 teachers. As a result, as many as 61 sculptures were made during the workshop, cast in brass. The participants were unequivocal: they left the workshops equipped with precious knowledge and skills. Some of the teachers who took part in the workshops discuss about new ideas for their sculptures.
The project is relevant also because the students have not been given an opportunity to learn how to cast metal sculptures before. The sculptures can be seen in the school’s gallery as well as its website and Facebook page. We hope that, when the occasion arises, we will be able to organize a real-life vernissage and promote the exhibition in the media.
