The exhibition of works by Henryk Stażewski, a great patron of avant-garde and the most outstanding representative of geometric abstraction in the Polish art, is another edition of the Masters cycle, which has been well received by the viewers and critics. The aim of this significant cultural undertaking is to present the works by the most outstanding Polish artists – masters, professors and precursors of the post-War avant-garde, whose pieces constitute a considerable part of the art collection of Anna and Jerzy Starak.
The exhibition will present the most characteristic pieces from the successive stages of the post-War period of the artist’s work: monochromatic reliefs with subdued colours and built of quadrilateral asteroids and metallic reliefs from the 1960s; reliefs formed using multiplied colourful squares, representative of his works created in the 1970s, and compositions from the later period, the main topic of which was the spectrum of the decomposed light beam.
The exhibition will be complemented in an exceptional manner by the presentation of the unique painting by Władysław Strzemiński “Sun afterimage. Woman at the window” from the collection of Anna and Jerzy Starak and “Abstract Sculpture no. 2” by Katarzyna Kobro from the collection of the Museum of Art in Łódź. Both these pieces open the presentation to outline the pre-War art activity of the founder trio of the Polish avant-garde: Kobro – Strzemiński – Stażewski.
An artist never stops, an artist’s work is never finished. It goes hand in hand with social transformations and technological advancement. It resides in the present but embraces the content of the past and foresees the future by sensing the aspirations of its own age. It is wrong to state that art is supposed to express only what is unchangeable, eternal. An artist taps the reality, which is changeable and elusive, takes what is continuous and common in the reality, and creates a work with a permanent and eternal meaning.
