Teresa Pągowska | Spectra Art Space MASTERS
10th January - 5th June 2022
curator: Ania Muszyńska
Teresa Pągowska – a painter, a poet of colour. Her paintings are filled with a world full of sensitive gestures, records of personal stories. The artist’s words, being a manifesto of this inner independence, appeal to me very much: “I’m not a sea, women, men or animal specialist. I am me: Teresa Pągowska”. At the same time, magically, we all feel invited to her intimate world of her own searches, own insights, own thoughts. This is a special skill, boasted by only few, to make an individual story one to which many can relate. Not necessarily universal one, rather sensitive like a seismograph to the phenomena accompanying us all. In 1961, on the verge of her career, Teresa Pągowska was entered by Peter Selz to the informal canon of Polish post‑War art, by her presence at the famous exhibition titled “Fifteen Polish Painters” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Sixty years after that event, I am most pleased to invite you to the exhibition of an artist, whose paintings still resonate with the present, remaining a permanent inspiration for successive generations of artists. This oeuvre is important and honest, clearly animated by the artist’s own biography, female sensitivity of the body and a great awareness of the painting of the 20th century.
