SPECTRUM | sculpture

Starak Collection
7th February - 29 March 2015
Artists: Magdalena Abakanowicz, Jan Berdyszak, Xawery Dunikowski, Katarzyna Kobro, Igor Mitoraj, Amedeo Modigliani, Alina Szapocznikow, August Zamoyski

Spectra Art Space inaugurates 2015 with a new Spectrum cycle, assuming the presentation of selected narrations from Jerzy Starak’s collection. The premiere part is dedicated to sculpture, represented in the first place by three brilliant Polish artists: Katarzyna Kobro, Alina Szapocznikow and Magdalena Abakanowicz. It is worth emphasising that the collection includes works by pioneers of the Polish avant-garde of the early 20th century, Xawery Dunikowski and August Zamoyski, as well as the sculpture by the world’s classic of that time – Amedeo Modigliani. A notable place in the collection is occupied by the works by Igor Mitoraj. The exhibition is complemented by structural paintings and Drawn sculpture created in the 1960s by Jan Berdyszak

Sculpture is not about moulding one figurine or another. A significant ground for sculpture is space and the use of space, organisation of the rhythm of proportions, harmony of form related to space. Sculpture should be a projection of organisational and technological capabilities of the epoch. Our cities suffocate as a result of absence of organisation and planned expansion. Our sculptures are erected on squares like roadside stones and pricks of conscience in honour and as ornaments of that chaos

Katarzyna Kobro (1898 – 1951)

Our times have given birth to the idea of a work of fine art which can express nothing. But we know it is impossible since thinking human beings carry everything inside themselves like a battery and fill all empty spaces with their own content. Hence, I regard having a specific idea and wanting to communicate it a fundamental issue. Matters related to form, in turn, are interesting to me as long as they serve the purpose of expressing it.
Jan Berdyszak (1934 – 2014)

Exhibition is open each Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Free entrance.
